Trudeau cabinet includes two Indigenous members

November 4, 2015. The new 31-member Trudeau cabinet includes two Aboriginal MPs. Former Assembly of First Nations British Columbia Regional Chief Jody Wilson-Raybould was named to the senior portfolio of justice and attorney general. Hunter Tootoo (Nunavut) was named minister of fisheries and oceans and Canadian coastguard.  Dr. Carolyn Bennett is the new minister of Indigenous and northern affairs. Bennett served as Aboriginal affairs critic when the Liberals were in opposition. The Liberals elected eight Aboriginal MPs. Two of Alberta’s four MPs were given Cabinet spots: Kent Hehr (Calgary Centre) was named minister of veterans affairs and associate minister of national defence, and Amarjeet Sohi (Edmonton Millwoods) was named minister of infrastructure and communities. The swearing-in ceremony, held this morning in Rideau Hall in Ottawa, was led by First Nations drummer Theland Kicknosway, included a performance by Inuit throat singers Samantha Metcalfe and Cailyn Degranpre, and ended with Metis jiggers Prairie Fire, consisting of Riley, Hunter and Jacob McKenzie.. At the beginning of the ceremony, it was recognized that the proceedings were being held on the traditional land of the Algonquin.
