National Aboriginal Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the occasion than with a quiz about all things Aboriginal. Here are a few questions about people, places and events that have been featured in stories in Saskatchewan Sage over the past year. How many can you get right?

1) In the August 2004 issue, we brought you a story about artist Dana Claxton and her multimedia exhibit that tells the story of her ancestors, who settled in the Moose Jaw area, following their leader, who had led them to victory against General George Custer in the Battle of Little Big Horn. Who was the legendary Hunkpapa Lakota chief that Claxton's great-great maternal grandparents and great-grandmother accompanied on the long trek from South Dakota to Saskatchewan?

2) A profile of actor Mathew Strongeagle was featured in the November 2004 issue. The young actor is one of the stars of the television show Moccasin Flats, and also landed the role of a young Sioux man in a much-anticipated mini-series being produced by DreamWorks Television ,with Steven Spielberg as executive producer. Can you name the yet-to-be-broadcast mini-series?

3) A story about Louise Halfe was featured in the February 2005 issue. Who is Halfe, and what new role did she take on in January 2005?

4) Another Saskatchewan actor was profiled in the March 2005 issue. Newly appointed to the Order of Canada, he has appeared in numerous movies and television shows. On the big screen, he was in Black Robe, Legends of the Fall and The Doe Boy. On the small screen, he's made appearances on Smallville, The X-Files, Due South, MacGyver and Moccasin Flats, but is probably best known for his portrayal of Albert Golo in North of 60. Can you name him?

5 ) In the April 2005 issue, we ran a story about the 41st annual All-Native Hockey Tournament, hosted by the Battleford's Indian Metis Friendship Centre on March 25 to 27. The winning team at this year's tournament was the same team to take top spot last year-the Redskins. The team's coach also has another hat he wears when not behind the bench, that of comedian. Do you know the name of this popular entertainer and part-time winning hockey coach?

Answers:

1) Dana Claxton's ancestors were followers of Sitting Bull. Her multimedia exhibit, Sitting Bull and the Moose Jaw Sioux, features images of the descendants of the Moose Jaw Sioux and deconstructed images from the Battle of Little Big Horn.

2) Mathew Strongeagle will be appearing in the 12-hour mini-series Into the West, scheduled to air on Turner Network Television in June. The epic, which will be broadcast over six nights, features an all-star cast and tells the story of the settling of the west from the viewpoint of two different families, one a family of settlers, the other a Native American family.

3) Louise Halfe is a poet whose published works include Bear Bones and Feathers and Blue Marrow. In January 2005 she was named Saskatchewan's poet laureate.

4) Gordon Tootoosis of Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan was appointed a member of the Order of Canada by Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson, becoming the third person in his family to receive such an honour. His late father, John B. Tootoosis, was appointed as a member in 1986, while his late sister, Jean Goodwill, was appointed as an officer in 1991.

5) The head coach of the tournament winning Redskins hockey team is none other than Don Burnstick.
