Cumberland House is benefiting from two recent announcements made by the provincial government that will see the community receive grants for social development programs, and funding to increase the amount of affordable housing in the area.

The Cumberland House Community Reference Panel, which works to advise Social Services on social development issues in the north, has received almost $43,000 in provincial government grants to help it continue its work.

The panel will receive $36,000 to cover the cost of a full-time co-ordinator, and $7,000 towards operation of the Cumberland House Youth Centre, which works to ensure at-risk youth succeed in school and pursue careers.

Provincial funding was also used to expand the amount of affordable housing available in the community, with the opening of eight one-bedroom units designed to house singles, seniors, and couples without children.

The $331,000 project is a mix of renovation and new construction, with two duplexes relocated to Cumberland House and placed on new foundations. The new foundations were built to include two new units, transforming the buildings into fourplexes, which will be managed by the Cumberland House Authority.
