Partnership formed for oil exploration

A signing ceremony was held on Sept. 2 marking the partnership between Flying Dust First Nation and Braveheart Oil and Gas Ltd. Braveheart, which is based in Calgary, will drill for oil on reserve land in the Bakken Oil Field in southern Saskatchewan and share the profits with Flying Dust. The roots of the partnership go back to 1997 when Flying Dust received money from the federal government through Treaty Land Entitlement. Canada gave Flying Dust between $15 and $20 million, which the First Nation used to buy land from farmers in southern Saskatchewan. Flying Dust is now in the process of creating a reserve on the land. It will then return the reserve to the federal government. The farmers will rent the land back from Flying Dust while Flying Dust and Braveheart will have the rights to drill on the land. The Crown is obligated to give the mineral rights to Flying Dust as part of the TLE process.
