Onion Lake takes championship

The Onion Lake Border Chiefs were the big winners at the Battlefords Friendship Centre 37th Annual All Native Hockey Tournament, held in North Battleford March 31 to April 1.

The Border Chiefs defeated the Edmonton Warriors 5 - 1 in the final game to claim the championship.

The Saulteaux 3-Stars took third place at this year's tournament, while the Petaquacay Blades finished fourth.

The high scorer of the tournament was Joey Potskin of the Edmonton Warriors, who scored 12 goals and got eight assists. Potskin also received the Smith Atimoyoo Trophy for most valuable player.

The Lawrence Weenie Trophy for best goalie went to Clint Chocan from the Onion Lake Border Chiefs, while Jason Rose, also from the Border Chiefs, received the Lyle Villeneuve Memorial award recognizing pride, desire and sportsmanship.

The Dog Town Raiders were named most sportsmanlike team, receiving the Henry Kennedy Trophy.

The all star awards were split down the middle between the tournament's top two teams, with Edmonton Warriors forward Dan Pelletier, defenceman Luke Reynolds and goalie Hector Burns each receiving all-star recognition, joined by Onion Lake Border Chief forwards Sheldon Wuttunee and Jason Currie, and defenceman Rob Bear.
