A new initiative aimed at increasing First Nations involvement in the agriculture, oil and gas, and tourism sectors has been announced by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN).

The announcement, made Aug. 24, will see $340,000 in federal funds go towards business ventures aimed at increasing First Nations employment opportunities in agriculture, oil and gas, and tourism, as well as to help form partnerships with businesses already operating in those sectors.

"Our goal is to form mutually beneficial partnerships between ourselves, government, industry and the private sector," said FSIN Chief Perry Bellegarde during a press conference held to announce the economic development initiative.

"Each new venture provides us with an opportunity to contribute to the Saskatchewan economy and brings us one step closer to self-sufficiency," Bellegarde said.

"Today's announcement is an example of our commitment to creating economic development and improving the quality of life for Aboriginal people," said INAC Minister Robert Nault. "There are numerous opportunities for First Nations members in these fields, and Indian Affairs is happy to work in partnership with the FSIN to build brighter futures and stronger economies."
