Healer's gathering at the Thunder Hills

Nekaneet First Nation will be holding a Traditional Healing and Medicine Gathering from Aug. 27 to 30. This will be the second such gathering held in the historic Thunder Hills, near Cypress Hills in southwest Saskatchewan.

Nekaneet First Nation Chief Larry Oakes is expecting many First Nations people from across Canada to attend.

"I welcome all those who want to come here to celebrate and take part in this gathering," he said.

The 2000 gathering attracted nearly 7,500 people, who crowded into the natural amphitheater of the hills to visit, listen and participate in the traditional ceremonies. The 2001 gathering will again bring together many traditional healers and Elders who will give teachings about their medicines and their associated ceremonies.

The focus of the 2001 gathering will be on a greater involvement of those attending the various traditional ceremonies. Healers and Elders will explain the significance and traditions of each of the ceremonies, prior to them being performed.

"Last year we talked about a great many of the issues facing First Nations people and what people could do to help themselves on their healing journeys," Oakes said.

"This year we want to encourage them to use the ceremonies as part of their healing process."

The gathering is also a time for people to visit and renew old friendships and there will be daily social ceremonies including round dances and pow wows as well as a feast and give-away.

The cultural significance of this event is very special to First Nations people, and the organizers ask that those intending to participate in this event do not bring any banned substances or alcohol to the gathering.
