The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) and the Saskatchewan government have signed a protocol formalizing the relationship between the two bodies, and paving the way for better communications on issues affecting both parties.
"We look forward to the implementation of this important arrangement that will provide our leadership with regular access to the premier and cabinet members to discuss matters central to the development and advancement of our First Nations citizens and communities in this region," FSIN Chief Perry Bellegarde said at the signing ceremony March 19. "We are pleased that the provincial leadership is taking this step to work in co-operation with our First Nations on issues that concern us and on efforts that will take us collectively into a winning future. Considering the projected demographics in the province, when First Nations win, everyone wins."
The protocol sets the framework for formal discussions between the FSIN and the provincial government on issues such as health, treaty land entitlement, lands and resources, economic development, and urban issues, as well as issues involving the federal government.
"The protocol is an expression of my government's commitment to continue the excellent work in co-operation with the First Nations' leadership toward substantive, positive change for all Saskatchewan people," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "Given current demographics, our province is faced with a pressing need to address First Nations' issues with practical, sustainable plans for a prosperous future. The bilateral protocol is an important vehicle to take us to that future."
