Family violence is not acceptable. That's the message being sent by the Saskatoon Indian and Metis Friendship Centre, as they design a program dealing with family abuse.

The centre was among the provincial organizations that received funding for Aboriginal community-based family violence programs. A total of $350,000 was distributed throughout the province.

Langford Whitehawk, a caregiver for the centre, said the project, receiving an estimated $35,000, will focus on reducing violence in Aboriginal communities, counselling victims and educating Native people about their culture.

"The program really needs an Aboriginal content so our people can understand it," said Whitehawk. "Having the Elders involved performing spiritual healing circles will be a big help."

Whitehawk said family violence in Aboriginal communities has been a problem for a long time. He believes these community-based programs will prove to be beneficial to victims and offenders alike.

"I've been in this field for 15 years during which I've travelled a lot. I've seen it (violence). A lot of our youth are in prison for committing these crimes," he said. "I believe this is the only type of program that can help."

Whitehawk said after the program is put in place, there will be regular evaluations to determine how effective it really is. In addition to counselling, the program will consist of lectures and group discussions in Aboriginal makeup.

Justice Minister John Nilson said there has to be a collaboration between government and communities to help put an end to such abuse.

"Violence and abuse in any form is unacceptable," said the minister. "This funding will continue to help urban Aboriginal organizations offer a holistic response to violence in families. Victims, children, offenders, other family members and the community will all benefit.

"Aboriginal organizations asked for help from the justice system in responding to family violence. This initiative will enable these organizations to offer culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal people in co-operation with others working in the family violence field."
