The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) is offering a new course on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) to students across the province, and potentially around the world.

The 45- hour non-credit course is designed to help adult educators, caregivers and others interested in learning more about FAS, providing them with information on the different types of FAS, and strategies to help them deal with children with FAS more effectively.

The course is currently being offered at SIAST campuses in Prince Albert and Regina, as well as through Parkland Regional College in Fort Qu'Appelle. A number of students are also completing the course by correspondence, through SIAST's Saskatoon campus.

The distance learning option has opened the course up to a much wider market-one of the students currently enrolled in the course is living in England, and a request for information about the course has come in from a person in Poland.

"Anyone can register for the course at any time," said Brian Mertz, SIAST dean of community services.

"In addition to the correspondence option, we can also deliver the course through regional colleges, First Nations communities, or other groups or organizations if the demand exists."

The next offering of the course at SIAST in Regina will begin in September, with another slated to begin in December. The course will also be offered again in Prince Albert, with the next session to begin in September and another in February.
