Saskatchewan's Onion Lake Cree Nation is rolling up its sleeves and welcoming a $22 million construction investment that will create more employment opportunities.
"This investment is more than building much needed housing and infrastructure. This is about creating jobs for our band members," said Chief Wallace Fox in a press release.
Located 50-kilometers north of Lloydminster, the First Nation of 4,750 people are anticipating the projects that will include; a 48-unit apartment complex in Lloydminster, 41 on-reserve housing units, school renovations and upgrades to the water treatment plant.
The 13 "shovel-ready projects" are funded by the Royal Bank of Canada, along with contributions from Onion Lake Cree Nation reserve and both the Federal and Provincial government.
Chief Fox is confident the multi-million dollar investment will bring positive change to the First Nation community.
"Our community benefits by having better housing, roads, water and sewage. At the end of the day we have a healthier and more prosperous community," said Fox.
Helping to create opportunities for band members is something Onion Lake Cree Nation has done for over a decade. In 1992, Onion Lake Enterprises was developed to provide Aboriginal people in Lloydminster and surrounding areas with jobs.
