The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan is initiating a new lecture series focusing on literature and fine arts, and has invited Buffy Sainte-Marie to give the inaugural lecture on Sept. 24.

The Gail Appel Lecture Series is a new series designed to bring some of the world's most outstanding artists to the university to speak to students, faculty, and interested members of the public.

Sainte-Marie, a world renowned singer, songwriter, educator, activist and digital artist, was born in Saskatchewan on the Piapot reserve. She has a long list of accomplishments to her credit, including creating the Cradleboard Teaching Project, earning an Academy Award for writing the song Up Where We Belong, and being named to the Juno Hall of Fame and the Order of Canada. She has twice received the Queen's Jubilee Medal, and this past spring also received an honourary doctorate from the U of S. Sainte Marie holds a PhD in Fine Arts and a degree in oriental philosophy.

The lectures in the series will be held once every two years, with the next lecture scheduled for the 2005-2006 academic year. The series is being funded through a donation from bachelor of arts alumni Gail Appel and her husband.

Sainte-Marie's lecture will take place at the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the lecture is free.
