For the second year in a row, the team from Black Lake Saskatchewan won the 1999 Canadian National Native Fire Fighters Competition, held this year in Quebec City.

Teams from across Canada represented the best of the best as the teams had to first defeat all other teams in their respective provinces to get to the national finals.

Representation this year came from; British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Region.

The competition is comprised of evolutions that closely simulate real fire fighting techniques. It is designed to test the fire fighters on how quickly and safely they can perform these evolutions.

The names of the winning team are as follows: Billy Robillard, Orest Robillard, Kenny Robillard, Ronnie Beavereye, Leonard Cook, Gary Kasyon and fire fighter instructor Richard Kent.

Richard Kent, the fire prevention officer for the Prince Albert Grand Council said the Black Lake Fire Fighters and with Black Lake First Nation were grateful for the assistance of their sponsors. They included the Prince Albert Grand Council, Cogema, Cameco, Cigar Lake Corporation, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies and Saskatchewan Northern Affairs.
