The Landmark Inn parking lot in Regina's south end was packed to overflowing with more than 120 classic cars - entrants in the first "Show and Shine 2000 Family Fun Day." This was a car show with a twist. It introduced the Aboriginal Classic Car Association, a fledgling organization. In conjunction with the Canadian Classics Magazine, the 20 member Aboriginal Classic Car Association invited all antique, classic, rod, custom, truck and muscle vehicle owners to show their stuff on Sept. 9. About 15 per cent of the entrants were of Aboriginal ancestry - the other participants came from about a dozen car clubs, some as far away as Thunder Bay, Ont. and Swift Current.
"This is a people's event," said John Witwicki, Saskatchewan representative from the classic car magazine. "We wanted to put together the first ever - in the history of North America - Aboriginal theme classic car show with which this sport can be used as a positive role model for young people. Aboriginal and non Aboriginal. We encompass sobriety, family unity and Racing Against Drugs by the RCMP. We also support Child Find and what is a no brainer in this society, "Don't Drink and Drive."
