A campaign designed to help Aboriginal women across British Columbia who are in abusive relationships continues to spread its message that there is hope - and help - for a better life.
The "A Safer Place" campaign was begun four years ago by the Native Courtworkers and Counselling Association of British Columbia. The campaign has recently been updated and expanded. The information booklet previously used with the campaign has been revised and updated, and a poster is now also available.
Both the poster and the booklet list contact numbers across the province for Native courtworker offices. The booklet also contains information about violence, explaining that any form of assault is a criminal offense, and that the Native courtworkers can help a woman in an abusive relationship find a safe haven for herself and her children.
According to information in the booklet, one in three Native women in Canada are abused by their partners, compared to one in 10 for Canadian women as a whole.
The campaign is funded by the Department of Justice, Legal Services Society of B.C., B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Services, and the B.C. Ministry of Women's Equality.
For copies of the "A Safer Place" booklet and poster, fax a request to the Legal Services Society Distribution Centre at 604-682-0965.
