The city of Regina has 20 new entries on its master list of names to be used for streets and subdivisions. Included among them are the names of a number of prominent historic Aboriginal people.

The civic naming committee submitted its annual report for 2005 to city council on May 24, which included a list of the names aded to the master list during the year.

The names of Plains Cree chiefs Beardy, Big Bear, Kahkewistahaw, Little Pine, Papaway, Star Blanket, Wandering Spirit and One Arrow made the list. The name Lepine was also added, in recognition of the contributions of Maxime Lepine, a good friend and trusted advisor to Louis Riel who fought at the battles of Fish Creek and Batoche.

The name O'Soup was also added, in recognition of Louis O'Soup, who spent much of his life fighting for the rights of First Nation people in the Treaty 4 area during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
