March 10, 2016. The province is looking for the next official trustee for the Northland School Division. NSD announced Thursday that Colin Kelly, appointed by the province in 2010 to serve as official trustee, plans to retire. Since Kelly’s tenure NSD has gone to full day ECS, implemented a division-wide focus on literacy, developed a committee focused on attendance improvement, developed educational partnerships with organizations such as Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council and Sustainable Communities Initiative, and partnered with industry to develop Career and Technology Studies programs. While Kelly is pleased with accomplishments made by NSD over the past few years, he says there is more work to be done. “Moving forward, my successor will need to sustain and improve upon the progress being made in the jurisdiction, continue to engage with communities, introduce initiatives that they he/she believes will impact overall student success and begin the transition from official trustee to an elected board of trustees in 2017,” said Kelly in a statement. Kelly took on his position when then-Education Minister David Hancock disbanded the NSD school board. Education Minister David Eggen has said that he is working toward an elected board for NSD.
