Ontario has established the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Group in response to one of the key recommendations of the Frank Iacobucci’s report, First Nations Representation on Ontario Juries. The group will serve as a forum for the government to collaborate with Aboriginal leaders and others with knowledge of Aboriginal justice issues. The group will consider ways to improve how the Ontario justice system impacts Aboriginal peoples and provide advice to the Attorney General. Grand Council Treaty #3 Grand Chief Warren White, who is also Chiefs of Ontario justice portfolio co-holder, and Murray Segal, former deputy attorney general of Ontario and former deputy minister responsible for Aboriginal affairs, have been appointed co-chairs. Their first responsibility will be to provide advice to the Attorney General on the group’s membership and the subject matters it will consider.
