The Chiefs of Ontario and the Government of Ontario have agreed to a political accord that will guide the relationship between First Nations and the province. The accord recognizes First Nations have an inherent right to self-government and commits the province and the Chiefs of Ontario to work together on shared priorities that improve the lives of First Nations people. The accord states, in part, that “the First Nations and Ontario recognize the importance of strong First Nations governments in achieving a better quality of life for First Nations and creating a better future for First Nations children and youth.” It commits leadership on both sides to meet twice annually and address agenda items that have been developed collaboratively. The political accord will be signed at a later date by First Nations leaders and Premier Kathleen Wynne.
